How does the design process work?

You come to me with your design idea, I’ll most likely ask for more information to get a good idea of what you’re after. Then, once I have all the information I need, I’ll quote you. If you’re happy with the quote, I’ll request 50% payment upfront and then guide you through the next steps (depending on the project). Once I’ve delivered the final design, you can then pay the remaining 50%.

How many revisions do I get?

I usually allow any number of revisions, as long as they are inline with the original brief. If any requested changes are outside of the original brief, these will be charged extra for. Although this will always be communicated to the client beforehand.

How many design ideas do you provide?

My logo package includes three design ideas. With everything else, I usually only provide one and then work off that one with any requested changes, etc. until we reach a final design you love.

What files do you provide me with?

This depends on the project but, for example, with logo design, I will provide you with: PNG, JPG, SVG, AI, as well as a Logo Composition PDF (including the logo variations, and colours and fonts used). I will always ensure that I deliver the design in all possible formats you may require it in, to send to printers, etc.

Do you provide the final, printed product?

No. For print designs or packaging, I only provide the design (in print format). It’s then up to you to find and work directly with a printing company.

How does the web design process work?

If you’re looking for web design, again, I’ll request some information upfront such as the function of the website and how many pages you’re looking for. I’ll then provide an estimated quote, including that of a wireframe. A wireframe is a very basic layout of each page of the website, which gives the client a better idea of the look and feel, as well as the functionality and flow of the website. I always work on this first, and have this approved by the client, before moving on to the web design. Should the client be happy with the quote, I’ll require 50% upfront (either per task, or for the entire project) and will then begin with the wireframe. Once that’s finalised, I’ll move on to the web design and, once that’s done, the remaining 50% can be paid.

Do you provide hosting / maintenance for websites?

No, I require clients to set up their own domains and hosting and simply provide me with the logins.

How long does your design take?

This depends on my current workload as well as the requested project. However, I will always communicate estimated timelines to you when providing a quote. For basic design requirements, I usually aim to provide the first draft within 5-10 working days of receiving the brief. For web design, I usually take 5-10 days for the wireframe, and around one-two months for the actual web design. Should my current workload be extensive, I may have a waiting period for any new clients which, again, will be communicated upfront. For design revisions, I usually aim to provide these within 2-5 working days, depending on the amount of work involved / the extent of the changes requested.

All of this being said, life does happen. I’m a human (who also sometimes needs time off), as well as a mom who prioritises her family. If a holiday is on the horizon, or unexpected illness/family responsibility comes up, I will always do my best to communicate this with you upfront and keep you updated on my progress with your work, while navigating life. Your understanding in this regard is much appreciated!

How often do you adjust your rate?

I will usually increase my hourly rate at the beginning of every new year.

Do you have a rate card?

No, I base my prices on a per-project basis as every design project is so different! Once I have received your brief, I will be able to quote you based on my hourly rate, i.e.: how long I estimate the design will take.

What if I don’t know what I want?

For every type of design request, I usually have a set number of questions I ask to help you get a better idea of what you’re after. For example, for logo design, I will send you these questions:

  • Company name
  • Slogan to be included (if you have one)
  • Would you prefer for the logo to be just font or include an icon / illustration? (if you aren’t sure, I’ll include both variations)
  • If you would like an icon / illustration included, what would you want this to be of?
  • Which font/s do you prefer? (if you aren’t sure, I’ll choose my own)
  • What is your color scheme? (if you aren’t sure, I’ll choose my own)
  • What would you like to communicate through your logo?
  • Who is your target market?
  • What is your brand personality?

Please send through a minimum of three current logos you like with regards to their style / certain elements about them (let me know what this is).

Once you’ve answered these, and spent some time looking at other logos, you’ll usually have discovered a style that you like!
